Sora and Riku

Sora is the main protagonist and main playable character in the Kingdom Hearts series. He is a brave and heroic Keyblade wielder from the Destiny Islands. Despite everything he has gone through over the course of the series, he remains upbeat and optimistic, with a remarkable capacity for forgiveness. It would be a mistake to picture him as a Madoka type, though, because this is an impulsive boy who doesn't hesitate to fight!

Riku is a main character in the series, starting as the secondary antagonist in KH1 and working his way to redemption, eventually becoming a playable character in some games. He also comes from the Destiny Islands, and he has a fierce loyalty towards his friends. He has always been shown with a desire to protect him, never hesitating to sacrifice himself to do so, although his personality is much more cool-headed and sardonic than Sora's, generally speaking.

The two of them are childhood best friends who have gone through hell and back to be together and to keep the other safe, despite the hardships their relationship faces along the way. Series producer Shinji Hashimoto has stated in an interview that the main focus of the series is Sora and Riku's relationship, and how it develops over time.
